THE RUGGEDS x TIJS ROOIJAKKERS

Eindhoven Airport, decided to showcase what our region has to offer to the 6,7 million passengers that visit the airport every year. Together with the Van Abbemuseum they look for interesting combinations of local artists that could showcase some of their work. And not just anywhere: Designer Piet Hein Eek created 3 exposition spaces for the main square of the airport.

To kick off the project, they asked us to collaborate with Tijs Rooijakkers a visual artist, who creates 'still standing movement’.

We came up with the idea to ‘capture motion’, by covering ourselves in paint and dancing on a wooden floor.

Tijs then set this floor in motion with his signature style, expressing the energy of our movement.

Due to the corona crisis, no flights were departing from the airport, so we asked and got the exceptional opportunity to dance and film the entire process on the landing strip of the airport. (We can check that off the bucket list). We created a video installation from this, where you can see how the entire process evolved.

Our artform of dancing is always an impression of the present, for us this was the first time, we’ve created something that we will leave behind, and won’t be a physical part of. So we also captured the motion in the overalls we danced in, and decided to casually leave these in the public space, to create curiosity around the project.

We want to thank Eindhoven Airport for the total carte blanche which is not a easy thing, since the 3 exposition spaces are right in front of the entrance of the Airport. Also we thank the Van Abbemuseum for bringing us together with Tijs, such a natural match, it’s uncanny. And last but not least we thank Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven for supporting the project through the Snelgeldfonds.
